Alan Roadburg, Ph.D.

Work Experience

John Klaas’s 35-year career as a financial planner and investment advisor included 25 years at MD Management. From 1985-1993, he served as a Financial Consultant and Regional Manager. More recently, he was the Practice Leader and part of Senior Management. (1993-2010)

As Practice Leader, John worked closely with Dr Roadburg in deploying Life after Medicine workshops and self-help books for the benefit of the firm's clients across Canada. John has used the principles of Life After Work in his own retirement planning, and continues to do so.

Academic and Industry Accreditation

Honours BA Queen's University (Economics) 1975.  Industry designations obtained during working career include: 

Certified Financial Planner, Registered Financial Planner, Chartered Financial Planner, Certified Investment Manager, Fellow Canadian Securities Institute, Fellow Life Management Institute, Chartered Life Underwriter, Chartered Financial Consultant.

Academic Experience

• 1978 Ph.D. Sociology, University of Edinburgh
• 1978 - 1985 Tenured Professor Dalhousie University, specializing in Social Gerontology (the study of aging), Social Psychology, Sociology of Occupations and Professions, and Leisure Studies.
• Conducted research among retirees resulting in various publications including the book Aging: Retirement Work and Leisure in Canada, Methuen Publications, 1985.  
• 1986 Adjunct Professor, Simon Fraser University Department of Gerontology, specializing in The Sociology of Retirement.

Practical Experience

• 1987 Changed careers to establish Second Career Program specializing in lifestyle retirement planning.
• Conducted hundreds of pre-retirement lifestyle planning workshops
• Carried out research on 1,130 retirees in the United States and Canada.
• 2008 Created Life After Work series of self-help books and videos to enable a broader distribution of this unique retirement lifestyle planning program.
